Donna is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 14,768 at the 2000 census. The city's motto is "The City with a Heart in the Heart of the Rio Grande Valley". Donna is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission Metropolitan Statistical Area. HistoryThe region was originally part of the La Blanca Land Grant, given to Lino Cabazos on May 18, 1834. The first Anglo-American Settler was John F. Webber, who in 1839 moved to escape persecution of his marriage to Sylvia Hector, a former slave. In 1902, Thomas Jefferson Hooks formed the LaBlanca Agricultural Company, which purchased 23,000 acres (93 km²) in Hidalgo County. Part of this purchase was given to his daughter, Donna Hooks Fletcher, a divorcee. In 1904, The St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railway reached the area, and a town was formed that July. As a kid, I remember the fabulous Moolah and some of her entourage like Donna Christentello and Judy Martin; today I am a Joshi mark and the #2 fan of the great Bull Nakano in US with Madusa a close second. But in the golden age of the Rock and Roll Connection 25 years ago there was only one: Wendi Richter from Texas. She unseated the Queen, the Fabulous Moolah, fought the great Monster Ripper Rhonda Singh from Canada, and showed the Rookie of the Year Madusa Miceli that she would need time and hanging with Bull and Aja to become America's best women's professional wrestler. Question:1: Will Wendi ever get the recognition from WWE and its current marks who think Trish Stratus was "old school"? I'm not discounting her talents and abilities at all but Wendi Richter is probably most-known for, and perhaps always will be, as the "bridge" between the "old school" territory-wrestler that was Moolah and the modern-day Diva that all of them have become (in the WWE). Richter was the first to really bring glamor, music, and a bit of Hollywood showmanship to women's wrestling. She deserves more recognition than she gets.
