From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. D is the fourth letter in the Latin alphabet. Its name in English (pronounced /ˈdiː/) is spelled dee, plural dees. There are various Egyptian hieroglyphs that might have inspired this. In Semitic, Ancient Greek, and Latin, the letter was pronounced /d/; in the Etruscan alphabet the letter was superfluous but still retained (see letter B). Greek letter: Δ (capital) or δ (small) (Delta). The minuscule (lower-case) form of D consists of a loop and a tall vertical stroke. It developed by gradual variations on the majuscule (capital) form. In handwriting, it was common to start the arc to the left of the vertical stroke, resulting in a serif at the top of the arc. This serif was extended while the rest of the letter was reduced, resulting in an angled stroke and loop. The angled stroke slowly developed into a vertical stroke. From Wikipedia under the

It will lower your overall GPA, which many colleges use for certain cutoffs. That being said it might not hurt you as much as you think. Colleges like to see improvement, so getting a D in the beginning of your high school years and then improving is a good sign (much better than doing well in the beginning and then slowly doing worse) Also it will depend on the kind of program in which you are applying for. If you want to be an Electrical Engineer or Physics major then they will want to see higher grades in physics and math courses.
