I decreased my basis to below my actual capitol gain, is this negative number tax deductable?
Q. My capitol gain after selling my property after 1 year is 50K, but after adding up all my items to decrease basis (commision fees, new roof, home improvements) it added up to 60K, is this 10K tax deductable at the end of the year or what?

A. I'm a little confused by the wording of your question, but I'll try to answer. Your basis, or cost basis as it is commonly known, is increased by any amounts you spend on your property. If this is a rental property and you sell it, your increased cost basis (after depreciation allowed), will decrease your capital gain, or, as it sounds in your case, increase your capital loss. I am assuming this is a rental property. If this is your principal residence, however, losses on sales are not deductible.

What does it mean to return maternity pay on pro-rated basis?
Q. My company's policy says that if I take maternity paid leave but leave the organization before my contract ends, I will have to reimburse the pay on a pro-rated basis. What does it mean? Thanks!

A. If they paid you 300$ per week for 20 weeks, they paid you 6000$. If you only stayed with the organization for 10 weeks you owe them for the difference. 3000$. That is the pro-rated amount. This is an example.
