They are generally identified by convention rather than any strict criteria, with seven regions commonly regarded as continents – they are (from largest in size to smallest): Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia. Plate tectonics is the geological process and study of the movement, collision and division of continents, earlier known as continental drift. Q. Before there were jets and cars, how were maps made? How did people know how far across a continent/ocean it was? In a lot of old books, they talk about "leagues", but how did they measure this? Yep - they use math and the old art of hands on measuring but even then, if you were to look at old world maps, you'll see that there methods were far from perfect. Some "authentic" maps are so far off that it looks like you're looking at a different world all together.
