The City and County of San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California and the 12th most populous city in the United States, with a 2008 estimated population of 808,977. The only consolidated city-county in California, it encompasses a land area of 46.7 square miles (121 km) on the northern end of the San Francisco Peninsula, giving it a density of 17,323 people/mi² (6,688.4 people/km²). It is the most densely-settled large city (population greater than 200,000) in California and the second-most densely populated large city in the United States. San Francisco is anchor to the 13th-largest metropolitan area in the country, containing 4.3 million, and is the financial, cultural, and transportation center of the larger San Francisco Bay Area, a region of 7.4 million people. In 1776, the Spanish established a fort at the Golden Gate and a mission named for Francis of Assisi on the site. The California Gold Rush in 1848 propelled the city into a period of rapid growth, increasing the population in one year from 1,000 to 25,000, and thus transforming it into the largest city on the West Coast at the time. After three-quarters of the city was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire, San Francisco was quickly rebuilt, hosting the Panama-Pacific International Exposition nine years later. During World War II, San Francisco was the port of embarkation for service members shipping out to the Pacific Theater. After the war, the confluence of returning servicemen, massive immigration, liberalizing attitudes, and other factors led to the Summer of Love and the gay rights movement, cementing San Francisco as a center of liberal activism in the United States. Today, San Francisco is a popular international tourist destination, renowned for its chilly summer fog, steep rolling hills, eclectic mix of Victorian and modern architecture and its famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, and Chinatown. The city is also a principal banking and finance center, and the home to more than 30 international financial institutions, helping to make San Francisco eighteenth place in the world's top producing cities, ninth in the United States, and fifteenth place in the top twenty Global Financial Centers. GNU Free Documentation License Traveling to San Francisco with my boyfriend for a weekend - What should we see? Q. Hi -- my boyfriend and I, (mid 20's) are heading to San Francisco for a weekend in June. We are thinking about hitting Napa Valley, but need some advice -- I see so many vacation packages including wine tours, Alcatraz, city tours, wax museum, etc. What are the must-see attractions? Thanks so much! Asked by Vanessa A - Tue Feb 2 10:34:15 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. One weekend is not enough time to travel outside the city. Where are you coming from? If outside California you might want to take a trip to Mt. Tam/Muir woods to see Redwoods. Alcatraz trip is usually must do for first visit because city is pretty from the Bay. Ferry Building is great for views and great snacks/food. I would hang out in the Embarcadero area, go to Golden Gate bakery in China Town for their great Egg Tarts, Eat Dim Sum at Louie's California Chinese restaurant. You can rent bikes/mopeds etc at Fisherman's Wharf to get over to Golden Gate Bridge view point (best views are underneath from Fort Point/Chrissy Field Area. At night try Matrix Lounge in Fillmore area (other stuff nearby too for nightlife). Q. I need to reach San Francisco by 9am for sight seeing trip. But I have the hotel in Cupertino. How to reach by public transport? Asked by RV - Wed Jan 9 10:49:42 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes, take the Caltrain up, yet depending on where in the city you need to go, you might have to exit the train at the Millbrae station and take B.A.R.T. to get to where you need to go. Caltrain really only has one major stop in downtown (the final one). You could take Caltrain to that station and get on the MUNI bus system to take you were you need to go. Or like I said earlier, take the BART into the city and possibly get off at a station closer to your destination and walk from there.
