The word student is etymologically derived through Middle English from the Latin second-type conjugation verb "studēre", meaning "to direct one's zeal at"; hence a student could be described as 'one who directs zeal at a subject'. In its widest use, "student" is used for anyone who is learning. They then move on to secondary school (also known as high school) for 'year seven' ('year eight' in Western Australia and Queensland) through to 'year twelve'. After year twelve, students may pursue tertiary education at university or TAFE (technical and further education). Children in primary and secondary school are all referred to as students. The term student is used for all learners including primary school, secondary school and university/TAFE. From Wikipedia under the

The most important thing is for the teacher to have a high expectation from their students. When the students are aware of that the teacher believes in their abillity the possibilities are endless. A child will respond if you have faith in him/her if not they shut down. Simple faith opens up all routes of communication. Take the example of the Kipp Academy... This is for high school teachers: do you let students go during class, and how do you determine who goes? I generally let students go one at a time (usually 4 or 5 per class period) if they have not caused any trouble in the room. Some students may just want an excuse to be out of class, while others may have a genuine problem and need to be excused. How do you decide whether it is a trick or legitimate?
