The word student is etymologically derived through Middle English from the Latin second-type conjugation verb studēre, meaning "to direct one's zeal at"; hence a student could be described as "one who directs zeal at a subject". In its widest use, student is used for anyone who is learning.

How to help students enhance their ability for listening comprehension in English?
Q. I'm a teacher that teaches foreign students. And many of my students find it really hard to get what people are talking about when watching Friends, House, and so on. Do you have any special tips for listening comprehension?

A. Listening to recorded voices is the hardest to comprehend. For some reason tv isn't much easier. Have them turn on captions when watching tv. Sometimes seeing the english words on the screen will help. House would be a problem because the character mumbles often and uses a lot of medical terms. Not a good choice for someone learning listening comprehension Friends is hard because everyone often speaks at the same time & tend to use slang. Generally, watching tv is a great way to learn listening comprehension. One show that is a good stepping stone for beginners is Millionaire, the game show. Merideth reads the questions clearly and you see the question and answer on the screen. Once they get used to hearing and comprehending the… [cont.]

I have some ideas already, for example busy schedule, lack of money, and stress. But I need more ideas becuase I need to write a three page essay on it also. I really would appreciate it if you can share some of your ideas. Thanks in advance!

University Students, How long was the longest paper you have written besides your dissertation?
Q. I am an Elementary Special Education (CI) major at a small university. I'm currently in an Educational Psychology class and working on a 25 page paper on the topic "Is Parental Involvement always beneficial for students". Have you ever had to write something this long? For what class? What was the specific topic? Should I get used to this long of essays?

A. I wrote a 79 page lab report on gamma ray spectroscopy in my junior year of undergraduate, single spaced, compact figures and tables. It was for a radiation detection and measurement class, and specific topic was on gamma ray measurments of 7 radionuclides using a scintillating tube. Since this, I have written a whole lot of 30-40 page lab reports. I do not know about your major, but if you were in engineering, i would say you have not seen anything yet. I was not crazy either, everyone's reports were of similar length, but maybe we were all just crazy. I also type up (physics) assignments for a particular class I am taking, they are usually 20 pages. In previous classes, some of my handwritten work including assignments and exams (i… [cont.]
