Q. How was the urban fabric of the medieval city modified since the 19th century in Rome, Paris, Vienna, Berlin and Venice? Giving urban and architectural examples, making references to the powers that sponsored such changes and their protagonists.

A. Well, this answer could go on forever, but I'll make it brief. The medieval city in Europe focused on the Cathedral and then the marketplace. After all, these where the two main functions of the city at that time: a place for farmers to sell their goods and a place to worship. Residences then formed haphazardly around those structures. With the Industrialization of the city, factories (and the zoning they required) became more important and the idea of areas devoted only to a certain function evolved.

What is civil engineering and what is urban planning?
Q. I'm looking at what I want to major in at college (I'm a sophomore in high school), and what I want to pursue for a career. I ran across a profession called civil engineering, and another one called urban planning. What do civil engineers and urban planners do? What are the differences between the two? By the way, I read about those professions through an article about lucrative jobs in the environmental or "green" field.

Civil engineers work on the details of building projects (could be buildings, bridges, or something else)...how many columns will it need, how far apart should they be, what type of concrete should be used, what would happen to it in the event of an earthquake, etc. Urban planners work on creating and evaluating more general plans for how cities should look and function...they might develop ideas like making a certain street pedestrian-only or banning buildings over four stories high in a certain neighborhood.

What master program should i choose to be an urban planner?
Q. I've got a bachelor diploma in sociology. What master program should I do, in order to be employed in urban planning? Is there a need for sociologists in urban planning?

A. A bachelor degree in sociology won't hurt you at all and should be quite an asset. For your master's you should look at urban or regional planning, urban design, or even geography. Make sure you check with any prospective school to see what their record is for placing recent grads into jobs. In 2007, 66 colleges and universities offered an accredited master s degree program, and 15 offered an accredited bachelor s degree program, in planning. Accreditation for these programs is from the Planning Accreditation Board, which consists of representatives of the American Institute of Certified Planners, the American Planning Association, and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning.
